"Banana Shire has a wealth of artistic talent and the Brigalow Arts Festival is an excellent venue for local developing and professional artists to compete against other artists at various levels of development. Entries come from all across the greater Central Queensland region and this year approximately 180 entries have been received. The festival is heavily supported by local business and industry and offers substantial prizes for each section. Banana Shire Council purchases an acquisition each year to be placed in the Banana Shire Art Collection. Other local businesses also purchase acquisitions each year to become part of a corporate collection. The main prize is the "Callide Coalfields" Art Scholarship of $1000.00 which allows the winner to attend a recognised School of Art to work in the chosen medium." - Cr Glenn Churchill - Mayor, Banana Shire Festival History: A group of ladies, including Mrs E Thompson, Pat Dawson, and Bev Johnston, began holding an annual "Art Show" in Biloela in the 1970s. The fourth Art Show was held in 1975 at the Biloela Library, and Rotary was the main sponsor. The Art Show was held at Thangool for a few years, after which it was held again in Biloela. By 1983 Ellie Nielsen and Hazel Mann were very much involved in the Art Show. The Banana Shire Art Gallery Association was incorporated in 1995, and in the following year the Brigalow Arts Festival had its first showing in the Biloela Civic Centre. The Brigalow Arts Festival continues to be held annually, by the Banana Shire Art Gallery Association Inc., in October, at the Biloela Civic Centre, in Biloela, central Queensland, Australia.
